What might cause Index corruption?

Hi, I have experience an Index corruption on one table. I'd like to know the root cause so that I can provent it. Here is some information about the table.

1)This records of the table may be frequently Deleted/Inserted/Updated via stored procedures, one record at a time (no bulk operations).

2)I noticed there are unnecessary index on this table. I suspect the cluster Index of ScriptID, non uncluser Index (ProjectID, ScriptID), non-cluster Index (ProjectID) caused the problem.

3)Will this be hardware related?

Have a look at the event log to see if there have been errors.
Often this sort of thing is caused by a hardware error but can just be a rollback failure such (these are a lot less common than they used to be as sql server is now a lot better at recovering).

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

Nothing you can do in T-SQL can cause this.

Can you post the output from
DBCC CHECKDB (LDAC_Figgie_Corrupted) WITGH NO_INFOMSGS, ALL_ERRORMSGS

When and how did you notice the corruption and when was the previous consistency check run?

Is there anything in the errorlog that indicates a disk problem?

What version + SP are you using?

Just to save me working it out again, some notes:

Index ID 2 missing (1, 2178) through (1, 2212)
Index ID 2 extra (1, 2170) through (1, 2174)
Index ID 4 is the same.

Hi, Paul

I got the database backup from the field, so I can't check the error log.

I don't think we did consistency check before, should this be included in the normal mantains plan, how often should we check this?

We noticed this because, our client applciation try to delete a record with a corrupted index, and the connection is dropped by the Sql Server.

Hmm - can't tell much from the errors except it looks like the clustered index b-tree is corrupt. You're looking at restoring from your backups or running repair, which shouldn't delete anything and should just rebuild all the indexes on that table.

Difficult to tell why it may have happened without errorlogs and digging into the schema to see if any bugs were fixed in SP4.

How often to run consistency checks? It depends on a bunch of factors - how much data you can afford to lose, your backup strategy, the downtime SLA if something goes wrong, flakiness of hardware/firmware...
