I just inherited another mess.I got about 48 database on this box, which are not in use, except for some stuff I've been asked to do...And the drive is 1/2 terabyte, and is full (morons...)I'm gonna use Tara script to back off new dumps of all the databases but I want to archive the existing backups....So.....which do you prefer to use?Does one outperform the other?Never had to deal with a mess like this before....Brett8-)Hint: Want your questions answered fast? I'm a BIG beliver in RoboCopy. It's fast, it's robust, and can handle "resuming" if you kill it.So, lets say half way through, you kill it. If you start it back up with the same command line, it will compare the files in the destination directory and only copy the stuff that's different.I can get you a nice command line to run RoboCopy if you need from my IT guy.As far as performance, we had to copy a few hundred thousand really small files, and it was WAY faster than a straight windows file copy.Michael<Yoda>Use the Search page you must. Oh, if you've only got a few really large files to move, you can kick off a few instances of RoboCopy to copy each of these large files to really max out performance. Needless to say your disk array is going to be REALLY busy while you do this, so be sure to do it during a maintenence window. I know I probably don't need to tell you that, but I just wanted to cover all the bases.HTH!Michael<Yoda>Use the Search page you must. Find the answer you will.</Yoda> |

I'll back Michael up on RoboCopy. It's extremely robust and fast. We were using it for a long time to copy about 350 GB of backups each night.MeanOldDBAderrickleggett@hotmail.comWhen life gives you a lemon, fire the DBA. |
