My exposure to TOP started back in the late 1980's when I purchased a dBASE III book. I quickly fell in love with dBASE and later its XBase derivatives.
OK, this is reasonable, I became a heavy Clipper programmer/fan, still kind of miss it to this day.
quote:
It made working with relational tables such a snap that I started to view ALL collections as XBase tables.
This, however, is pure crack-smoking. dBase had LESS THAN ZERO ability to handle "tables" relationally. dBase HAD NO TABLES!!!! A "table" in dBase was considered a separate DATABASE, and was stored in a separate FILE. INDEXES where also stored in separate FILES. dBase would not even use an index unless you EXPLICITLY TOLD IT TO. This was a hallmark of ALL Xbase databases, with the possible exception of Visual Foxpro (I don't know VFP well so I can't say).

dBase had a SET RELATION command that could link tables, but unless the columns you wanted to link were indexed (and you set the indexes beforehand) you could only link on...

RECORD NUMBER!

Which, as we all know, is a <heaviest possible sarcasm> fundamental relational construct. </heaviest possible sarcasm>

So I'd agree with Damian on this one, except to modify it a little:

blah blah blah wank wank blah take-a-hit wank blah take-a-hit wank wank take-a-hit take-a-hit blah take-a-hittake-a-hittake-a-hittake-a-hittake-a-hit wank what was I talking about?

This is only from reading the first few paragraphs
Think it's summed up by

>> Although SQL is a high-level language that is quite powerful for certain types of operations, it is far from a general-purpose table processing language. Many programmers end up writing "speggitti-SQL" because the alternative is to use annoying API calls or convert to data cursors. SQL is also a poor match for interactive programs because it is more of a batch-processing and query processing language.

Sounds like a concept for application programmers who don't understand databases or sql to allow them to do things that they think are difficult without admitting that they need help.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

lol, Nigel; Btw, I liked one observation of that "philosopher", here it is:

SQL also has an annoying nest-happy LISP-like structure, which makes
breaking down the logic into manageable chunks tough, especially for multi-joins.

And I think he's absolutely right. But I count this as a great compli(or e?)ment for "us".
