Please help us with your inputs and ideas.
Next week we're planing to upgrade our old SQL server. And this time we want to do it right.
This is the hardware we have:
1. 2 3ware 9650 SATA RAID up to 8 drives(1 new and one in our current SQL server)
2. Tyan 7002 motherboard with 2 xeons e5520(new)
3. 10 WD 150GB Raptors(6 in use in RAID 10 with our current SQL)
4. Tyan motherboard with 2 Opterons 265(old) our current SQL server
5. 4 WD 74GB Raptors.(old not in use)
6. 2 Rack cases Chenbro RM31212B for 12 +2 HDD
My understanding is that for best performance Windows OS,TempDB,Log file And Data file should be located on different sets.Since our company doesn't have SAN we have to do go with local drives.
I came up with 2 different setups and I can't decide witch one to choose
Case 1
2 disks in RAID 1 for OS Windows Server 2003 -64bit(motherboard raid)
4 disks in RAID 10 for data file (3ware)
2 disks in RAID 1 for log file(3ware)
2 disks in RAID 0 for tempDB(3ware)

Case 2
4 disks in RAID 10 for data file(3ware)
4 disks in RAID 10 for log file(3ware)
4 disks in RAID 10 for tempDB (Intel On board RAID controller )
2 disks in RAID 1 for Windows OS

The other thing witch is essential for us is in case of disaster to be able to move quickly the database to our old Opteron Server by just swapping the drives. This is way we have this extra 3ware controller.I think that since the database is on 3ware RAID it really doesn't matter what kind of motherboard is running the OS as long is configured with the same drivers. However, I'm not sure about the second case since we're going to loose tempDB because is on Intel Motherboard RAID.
Thank you.
