except in my case "perish" meant get a job i enjoy as a software engineer and make lots more money than those sorry postdocs!

Yes, but think of the glory you're missing.

The local press informs me that Claudia Schiffer house [just down the road] has been sold to Jordan.

So my mates have switch jargon from "Shiffer Spotter" to "Jodrell Jordan"

If we can ever afford to build the house extension we hanker after I have designs for a viewing platform built into the roof. Which would be a good excuse for a mega-bucks telescope ...

... you non-astronomers who have never done so should ask a chum with a telescope to show you Saturn (its in the night sky for the next month or so). Even with a modest telescope (but NOT with a Department Store telescope!) will be amazed.

Go on, do it ... its not too late to make a New Years resolution!

Don't real astronomers build their own telescope?

I can't say for sure as I don't want to be targeted by it.

actually at a talk once I remember Jim Gray calling skyserver the world's biggest telescope. In a way, it is.

I was in a telescope shop in London (probably the telescope shop) buying one for my father and picked up a couple of books on building telecopes at the same time. All of a sudden all the other customers wanted to talk to me about their experiences and give advice. It was a small shop but people came and went and I was there for about 2 hours.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

"Don't real astronomers build their own telescope?"

I'm quite keen to grind a 20" mirror for a reflector - well, a Dob.

Other household projects have taken priority for the last couple of years though.

"probably the telescope shop"

This one?
