Read this:

http://www.baselinemag.com/article2/0,1540,2082921,00.asp

If it looks too long read the sections where it starts at 500,000 users to 1 mill, 2mill, ... etc.

Learn a lot just reading this stuff.

Granted I only skimmed the article, but I did skim each page...I wonder how big their databases are. It's probably in the terabytes, but I wonder how many.

You'll have to read the rest of the article :) as you'll get a very good idea :). Cant believe in the beginning they were running on one SQL box...then they got to 9 servers with a lot of replication going on. I like the section about how they changed over to 64 bit sql server 2k5 and how they hit terroritory where even MS was having trouble replicating the same issues. Can you imagine the money they spent on IT consultations :)

Well when I say skim, I mean I read about 75% of it. I read all of the configuration changes that they made. I just didn't see database sizes anywhere.

We've been in production with our 64-bit SQL Server 2005 4 node cluster for a few months. We got some pretty beefy servers too. Performance is outstanding so far.
