anyone here use linkedin? it seems like it is a myspace for grownups. I've actually been able to track down some people I used to work with. Pretty cool.

btw, I don't work for linkedin and i have no affiliation other than I have an account with them.

Very well designed first page though ...

Lots of these have been and gone before ... can't even remember the names of some of them, but one early one offered to have your contacts and diary on line. If someone moved you didn't have to do anything because they would update their details and that would update the address book for everyone they knew; and the diaries would be compared so if your "paths crossed" it would tell you - so you'd go to Timbuktu for a conference and blow me down if John who you haven't seen for 20 years was on a business trip 5 miles down the road ... I have a feeling whatever that outfit was got swallowed up by BigFoot - do they still exist? they were trying to do email-for-all - like HotMail and GMail et al.

Anyways ... I have a hyphen in my surname, it wouldn't let me look for myself. Bah! You'd think it would have just removed the "special character" as they called it (how quaint!) and given it a go ...

There was one some years back called sixdegrees.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SixDegrees.com). The concept was pretty cool, you could browse through your and get statistics on your different levels of degrees, and you could send out questions to your up to 3rd level 'friends' (friends of your friends friends).
Only problem was that when they went down, someone sold/stole thier entire email address list and made it public for spammers. I know that because I was registrated with the three email address I used at the time, and I began to recive identical spam mails on all three simultaniously, sad story indeed.

We have www.FriendsReunited.co.uk over here - that was pretty successful. They charged 5 GPB (USD 8-10 I guess) a year to be allowed to send emails OUT to old friends. You could put in where you went to school and worked, and could thus find long lost friends.

Bit hard to get a repeat subscription though ...

... they have a dating site now, but I'm not sure about lists of friends that are current and don't need the "reunited" part of their service! Haven't looked at their site recently.

Telling you that would also tell my prospective clients checking me out on the web how little I actually know about SQL Server!

I got dragged into Linked in a while back, I don't use it much but occasionally log in to allow people to add me.
I should go and update it for my new job

Sometimes it can take up enough time to be a job

As of two weeks ago I'm not a developer anymore. I've taken a job as a "Solutions Architect" with a company who sell a media management system, helping design and plan integrations with customer systems. So far, it's meant a lot of travel. I just got home from a week in Seattle
The upside is, I now have a bit more time, and a good reason to get up to speed with SQL 2005. I've been stuck on a bunch of projects that used 2000, so I really haven't spent enough time with all the new stuff.

I am in linkedIn, but I'm not a frequent user, so probably should login in/get my password sent to me again :-)

If you search for me (from my profile) you should find me, ec.

"Thread-locker"

Its a bit like asking the new young apprentice [male!] to go tot he stores to get "two greased nuts" - works best if you have female staff on the stores' counter of course!

Anyways ... seems that Merkin is available in bottles now:

I think it would be interesting to get a group here linkedin. It certainly would be a good recommendation engine for future gigs.
