just have to share...

dbm [short for db mangler --oopss manager]: sql2000 is obsolete, so your request for upgrade to per processor is denied
me: huh? what do you mean by obsolete?? MS won't support it anymore?
dbm: sql2000 is obsolete because sql2005 is out
me: but we haven't even finished evaluating and you bought a new tool to monitor the sql2000 servers and there's nothing in the site that says it's obsolete and there are no...
dbm: sql2000 is obsolete...

just like talking to a live bot ...

That's right Jen.. Actually you are obsolete too, because there's new babies produced every second. Of course, they are not ready yet, but that doesn't matter...

Never buy version 1.0 of anything. Tell him 2000 isn't obsolute until at least three patches are out for 2005.

OK, I am assuming you are talking about changing your licensing from user CALs to the per processor licensing. If you are, then this is a licensing issue not a technical one - the fact that SQL2K may or may not be obsolete is irrelevant. Now, you are either purchasing the per processor licensing because:

1. You have an external facing application with users connecting from internet or multiplexed in some way
2. You have reached the point where it is cheaper for you to use per proc licensing compared to named user/device licensing because your organization is so large (and you only have 1 SQL server)

If you are not in either of these categories then I cannot see a reason to purchase the per proc licensing. Anyway, your investment should be safe if you purchase the licensing under microsoft SA. Although, I am not 100% certain if CALs are covered under SA. You'll have to ask your MSFT licensing person if they are.

I haven't checked into it, but this probably means that you can buy the licenses for SQL 2005, but deploy SQL 2000 with that license.

MS did the same thing when they went from SQL 7.0 to SQL 2000. I remember at that time we needed to rollout SQL 7.0. and found out they no longer sold it. When we call MS, they explained that the SQL 2000 license let you deploy SQL 7.0.

Oh, and give your db mangler a knock on the head for me.

thanks MVJ, I checked this out too to confirm, and clarified from MS what is meant by discontinued (this bot has limited words you see, probably not yet trained). Apparently, only the "license" for sql2000 will not be released anymore but the licensing of those machines with or will use sql2000 will use sql2005 downgrade licensing feature.

Stevie, I am now in the process of stopping the pain and will always go direct to the source for information (2nd hand information is always confusing)

Andrew, you are partly correct (reason: got tired babysitting and spoonfeeding and cannot see in the foreseeable future that things will get better, I did hope for a while naive as it may seem)
