Now that the Data Corruption forum has been going a while can someone please explain to me why every time I read a message in there I want to run off and test my backups.

It's really scary in there, I've pepped in a few times only to find myself more confused. Paul R. is holding it off pretty well though, knowledgeable guy, me thinks he is a robot

Anyone know the top 5 causes of data corruption? (This isn't a joke, I am only curious)

The number one cause is disk problems. The rest are going to be different hardware probems.

It's amazing the number of people posting there that have no backup at all or one that's a month old.

Makes me want to cringe. I know backups aren't fun to setup and manage, but how can you put yourself in that position?

Funny you mention that one of the engineers that has been working on a "ECN" database in our company got a call from me today. I noticed he had no backups listed for his database. When I called him and asked him if he wanted me to set him up with a backup procedure / process he stated nah we don't need one, we should have no problems. That's what I used to think :).

Call him up in a couple of days and tell him you just accidentally dropped all the objects in his database, say you are sorry for the inconvenience, and ask if he can please recreate all his objects and data from scripts.

When he's done hyper-ventilating and crying, tell him you were just kidding, and ask if he still feels he doesn't need a backup.

I think it has 2 causes.

1) SQL Server is easy to use out of the box.
2) Too young! A lot of people haven't seen let alone used a 5 1/4 floppy. In those days if you didn't have 3 or 4 copies of everything (OS, applications and data lived on them remember) you where screwed.

Ah, 5 1/4 floppy disks were luxury in my day. Back when I were a lad you had to save all your data by writing it down in cuniform on a clay tablet...

I made a typo... I just changed it to 5 1/4...

Cuniform... bloody technocrat..

We used to grunt to each other in morse code!
And the only way to make a backup was to get lucky..
