In OUTLOOK

TOOLS, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, CHANGE ACCOUNT, MORE SETTINGS, ADVANCED TAB

There are settings for secure email transmission. Handy if you're using public WiFi.

Google supports it...

My wife [she has to send confidential legal documents by email] uses Digital Certificates (or whatever they are called now) and PGP for confidential email.

While PGP is great for securing email content end-to-end, my concern is the exposure of username/password logins and secondarily my transmitted data. I don't belive PGP changes the POP / SMTP protocol to a secure mode. This may mean that while the data payload is secure, the POP/SMTP username/password are sent in clear text over public WiFi access points. PGP protects your data, but the username/password could be captured by a WiFi hacker if you depend only on PGP.

Unsecured/unencrypted public WiFi is being aggressively deployed for easy access (e.g. airports are offering free unsecured public WiFi). It's tempting to use the connectivity to perform work-related functions while waiting for a flight, but it's important to recognize that the availability and ease of access is granted both to legit users and anyone who might like to casually monitor and capture WiFi traffic. All it takes is a laptop, the time, and the interest. This puts a new value on using encrypted FTP and SSL Email.

I don't see many POP/SMTP vendors offering SSL access. If anyone knows a vendor, I'd like to know who it is.
