We haven't had a survey for ages so here is a new one for you. My wife wants a new TV and it seems like a minefield to me as there are so many variations so I asking people what they have. (SELECT TVCHOICE FROM SQLTEAM)

Please answer this for the main (or newest) TV that you have

1. What make is it
2. What size is it inches please

- does size matter?
3. Is it LCD, LED, Plasma, other?
4. Is it Full HD (1080p)?
5. How long have you had it?
6. Have you had any problems with it?
7. Would you recommend it?
8. Approximately how far do you sit from it?

1. Mine is Samsung Series 4
2. 24 inch
3. LCD
4. its full HD
5. Bought it 8 months back
6. too early to experience any problem
7. definitely yes if you're looking for digital picture clarity. Audio is not great so you need a good 2.1 audio set at least to supplement it.
8. our TV is in moderate sized hall so I think approx 200 metres

I'm more impressed with the size of the "moderate sized hall" that is at least 200m across. You could park a 747 in there.

I also have an LG blueray. Either remote (TV or Bluray) runs both the TV and the BluRay.

I think he meant 200 square metre.That will be like 20 metre x 10 metre.

You didn't ask 1 VERY important quest..the refresh rate..

120MHz

240 is better. Nothing less than 120 though

Good Luck...and don't buy into all the 3D crap

Another HUGE thing is getting the TV that is WiFi connected and a smart tv..NOT WiFi "Ready"..which needs extra sheet...or get a blu-ray player that connects to WiFi...I love all my streaming stuff...NetFlix..Hulu..Amazon Prime..NHL...MLB....whou freakin needs Cable?

I also have a 7.1 receiver/sound system (Sony receiver/Polk Audio speakers and subwoofer) and a Sony Playstation3 to play BluRay discs and connect to NetFlix. I think the sound system is important to give the full movie theater experience.

I have a pioneer 42" 1080i and the panasonic 50" 3D tv. Both brilliant - Panasonic of course a lot better - don't use it for 3D.
Had the Pioneer for a few years and the Panasonic for 1 year - no problems with either.

I've got a Panasonic 43" plasma, must be 7 or 8 years old (I presume that HD wasn't available then, or was ridiculously expensive, so it ain't HD!!)

Why do you folk that were anti-Plasma feel so strongly?

Every time I see an LCD or whatever it is in the local shops the picture quality looks rubbish compared to my, now ancient, plasma.

Its been no trouble Steve, if that is of any use. We sit about 4M away from it, although the kids are sometimes only an inch or two away!

Thanks all for the replies, very helpful indeed. Like Kristen I was wondering about the anti-plasma sentiments especially as my wife has taken a look at all three in a shop and declared plasma to be her preference (and we all know what that means). I understand that panasonic are some of the better plasma's (if they don't buzz too loudly).

Brett I didn't ask about refresh rate is it seems to be a minefield, I'm sure I have seen claims of 600 Hz on some, and the whole 50/60 thing of course (I presume your 120 is our 100).

Thanks Charlie for the tip about John Lewis.

I deliberately didn't ask about 3D as I haven't found anyone yet, apart from the local village idiot (he's in the next office), who enthuses over it. I don't want to pay extra for something that I most likely won't use (Don't really want to wear glasses just to watch the news over breakfast?).

As for the networking stuff, I find that interesting but am not sure our current connection can cope - fibre to the cabinet soon (sigh) - bring it on.

Crank up the surround-sound :) Can't say I've noticed any buzzing with mine.

I would definitely have 3D (but probably Not Yet) - you are only going to watch 3D when you choose too ...

The appeal of HD surprises me (I can see the appeal in the USA, 'coz their original was so much lower-definition that ours). But for me I can't see a difference worth paying for, and we don't have Sky HD for that reason. We're not a sport-fanatic household, if we were that might make a difference. Our neighbours have a fantastic Carlos-Fandango system and I really struggle to see much difference between HD and normal - e.g. flipping channels on Sky Movies between HD and Normal.

On the HD note....

I have a computer hooked up to the TV (over HDMI). I've experimented with different tech (XBMC, PLEX) etc but for various reasons (Wife Acceptance Factor included) the computer now run vanilla windows 7. it's much better than anything else I've tried when using things like 4OD or BBC Iplayer.

Control is achieved via a bluetooth keyboard with an inbuilt track pad. (this one in fact: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-Cordless-Mediaboard-pro-Bluetooth/dp/B000W9N7JU)

Computer is also our home media hub for itunes etc. It's really convenient to plug in iphone into the doc under my Tv and then sync.

Also -- MAME is awesome on a 40inch TV!

If you've ever tried to use the windows 7 UI in a standard def mode then you will have probably gone mad and your eyes would have imploded into your skull.

the difference between 1080P and 720P is very noticeable when using the UI. It isn't noticeable at all (to me) when watching videos. (I can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p in video)

Saying that, on Iplayer, I'll much rather watch a nature documentary in HD than SD. You *can* certainly tell the difference between even 720p and 480p / i.

Perhaps a trip to the opticians should be on the cards..

Seriously though, the picture on *most* HD channels is much sharper (BBC not so much as the compression rate they use screws it more than other channels). The other bonus is the sound is much better as well, if you have a decent surround system you will notice it (I have a Harman Kardon and it makes a massive difference).
