I think Apple's web site says it all:
"iPad. Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary product at an unbelievable price."

Does it run SQL Server?

I've seen two great reviews - one funny, and the second one insightful and, as usual for him, eloquently crafted.

"HEY! You're talking about half of my associates"

According to my wife the other half of your associates will, therefore, be women?!

Could always buy enough of them to redo the floor in the office, you could then use random apps every step of the day.

Can't think of any other useful application for it.

That sounds cool. I am sure the price will come down very fast very soon. Maybe i will get a couple of them for my floor. Hopefully the screen can withstand my weight

Id be prepared to consider it despite all the flaws listed here. (Most of those can be circumvented or alleviated with some hacking - a la iphone).

However, the real turn off for me was the screen ratio. 4:3 ?? For why ?? it's not a good fit foe either paper or video....

I wonder if you could use it to build a video wall.

Do people still read newspapers? and are those who do likely to spend $500+ for the privelege. As far as the book thing goes I really don't see whats wrong with the existing format (I've certainly never spent $500 on a book). Would you really want to read an ipad in the bath?

Forget about the $500 ... that's the up-front only. People pay that for all sorts of gadgets.

Take a stack of books with you, and read them on something lighter and easier to hold than a book. plus it can do all the other stuff too. yeah, I think that is likely to have appeal. My household has been thinking about Amazon Kindle or a.n.other - we strive to be green, we don't like dead-tree books, newspapers, magazines for that reason. A suitable "reusable" book would be of interest. We haven't done it for two reasons: 1) Kindle is a book-only replacement (don't like the carbon-footprint of that - iPad scores better if it could be my computer-on-the-move too) and b) way too few publishers and offering their books - but that will change given time

Yeah, but most book/newspapers are made from mostly recycled materials these days anyway, so that takes that out of the equation.

I know you can take loads of books with you, but I still find it easier on my eyes to read a book over any other format, even the kindle doesn't do it for me with its easier to read screen (apparently).

Video wall sounds good, but at 4:3, not very practical unless you have a wall with very high ceilings or a tiny office..
