What tools do you guys use to remote connect to your servers? The one that comes on the AdminPack (Remote Desktops) doesn't let you sort and it got to a point where I can't manage my servers.

Any suggestions?

I just type in mstsc from Start..Run to get to RDC window. I just type in the server name from there. That lack of sorting made me stop using that tool.

My husband uses RDC, however he's got some software that allows him to manage them better. Once he gets back online, I'll ask what he uses. He has to connect to like 20 servers at the same time, so he definitely needed a better tool that still uses RDC.

Tara, since your husband is obviously in IT, how come he doesn't post here?

He posted here about 5 years ago, but he rarely works on SQL Server. His systems are mostly on Oracle. He's not a DBA though. He's a developer and application administrator (such as PeopleSoft and Kronos). He also does some server administration. He supports both Windows and Linux servers.

The tool he uses for RDC is called Royal TS. Check it out here: http://www.code4ward.com/main/ He also uses this one since it handles telnet, vnc, TS, and others: http://www.codeplex.com/terminals

It's a boy. I don't know that I could recommend IT in the United States with all of the outsourcing.

I'm a big fan of Terminals. I have to log in to various client's systems and it let's me consolidate all of them. I only have about thirty entries in there right now. I'd also avoid the latest version and stick with 1.0.

I just downloaded Terminals and it seems that there are a lot of functions available.
Another note, Mike's web site is pretty cool, good stuff there.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not bitter personally, but there aren't as many high-paying IT jobs in the US anymore due to outsourcing to other countries. From a comapany perspective, outsourcing makes sense. But from a nation's perspective, it doesn't.

I'd probably recommend engineering when my son gets older. That's the track I would go down if I had to do it all over again.

I'd say it starts at 80k for a developer, which is mostly what I was referring to about the outsourcing. You can certainly find high-paying jobs here in IT, however it's not like it was a few years back. There are less good paying jobs and more people applying for them. The economy certainly isn't helping either.

One of the safer (in terms of outsourcing) places to work in IT would be government jobs, but they usually do not pay as well as private companies.

UltraVNC ... http://www.uvnc.com/

(Make sure that the video hook driver is used on the "server", with it CPU use is minimal, without it ... ouch. Think that in the latest releases this is installed as a default rather than as an option)

Fair enough, although here in Britain that would actually be considered middle-range pay after adjusting for exchange rates. Though we need it, with the price of housing and fuel. Caveat - I'm thinking of DBA's, and you said 'Developers', who are paid a bit less here (than we are).

What do you Americans get on contract terms?

What do you mean by "contract terms"? I'm a full-time, salaried, exempt employee so I'm not on a contract.

I mean contractors, as in those fixed-term, non-salaried staff who nearly always work through an agency or other 3rd party. And, what are you exempt from?
