I am deeply thankful for the help I have received here over the years. The generosity of people like Robvolk and Tara and others have really made a difference. But this was generally in the day when the answer to the question "What is SQL Server?" was a somewhat shorter one.

Now with things steaming ahead with SSRS, SSAS, SSIS, 2008, etc... the days of having at least one specialist person on this website answering questions in each sub-sector of SQL Server skills seems to be over. The product has become too big. The volume and increasing complexity and specialisation of questions seem to have become to much for the few truly knowledgeable people who answer questions here. And the "Knowledge" just isn't there anymore as a result. There don't exist people who no a subject inside-out and back to front. Anyone like that is probably too busy making a small fortune applying his knowledge and has no need/interest in sharing it. As a result, there seems to be one or two people now that, despite being very sincere and trying their very best to help, post "answers" to questions that don't really help at all.
Are the glory days of SQL Team over?

I don't see many questions here that go unanswered ... but I don't have a means of measuring the "satisfaction" rating of the OP

For starters, I've noticed a few SSRS ones going unsolved.

the problem is that 90% of the questions are repetative in nature.
and i personally don't quite feel like typing the same answer over and over again.
another problem is that the posters rarely provide all the needed information.
yet another problem is that the members here are older and have more real life responsibilities that may keep then from
being constantly on line.

but i don't think you should fear anything... we're still going strong.

I did notice however that we lack people who would know much about SSAS, SSIS or SSRS.

SSRS goes unanswered because Jon is on vacation
he kicks ass in SSRS.

I agree with everything you have said, it kind of confirms what I have been saying.

  • You all have your own lives to be getting on with

  • the subject matter for discussion is growing exponentially

  • Your popularity has become your downfall in way. Too many numpties ask questions now. There's no "Elite" area on your website where only those that know a little more are allowed in. These people would be individually chosen by the moderators once they have got to know them a bit through the nature of their questions and contributions on the main forum pages.

Questions about SSIS or DTS tend to go unanswered for the simple reason that experienced DBAs tend to avoid using SSIS or DTS.

Hopefully early next year we will (finally) upgrade our servers here and move to SSRS and instead of Crystal reports ... once we do, I'm sure I'll have lots to contribute regarding that topic. I just haven't had time to play with it as much as I'd like.

There already is an elite section. You are in fact looking it over right now ;-).

Crystal Reports seems to be impossible to avoid.
How such a crappy piece of garage software becomes an industry standard would surely make an excellent marketing case study.

There is an elite section. If you can't see it then you aren't elite. Q.E.D.

"I agree with everything you have said, it kind of confirms what I have been saying"

I strongly disagree with you.

There have been a number of high-posting registratrants in the last year or two. That has easily kept pace with the increase in the number of questions.

The "old guard" would answer more questions, but the humdrum ones get answered so quickly that they don't get the chance so much.

I don't see the humdrum questions being a problem. Sometimes such posters get short-shrift answers, but they do get their question answered

I have certain usernames that I avoid - because I know that they are complete twits, or cannot reliably phrase their question and therefore my time will be wasted until the 4th or 5th iteration of the thread. Conversely I have a number of usernames who's questions I always read, regardless of whether I think I can be any help or not. My own questions here are frequently unanswered, I see that as being either because I'm a maverick and not sufficiently normalised for my problems to be suitable or because I'm having a problem that I can't solve because it is unusual / not encountered before.

I do see quite a number of XML questions going unanswered here. The whole tune of them generally scares me to death, and looks to be coming from a machine-generated-XML approach (no human could undersatnd / work with that complexity of XML) and is probably being used as the wrong tool to solve the problem - i.e. no relational database understanding at all, and thus even less normalised than I am!. The OPs would be better off posting their question, not 50% of their perceive answer

Peso is the only one with the patience to even try to help someone like this. Even with numerous follow-ups requests, they never even posted the query that caused the problem.

I don't think an elite forum would do much good. The elite usually don’t need much help.

Well I reckon that Peso needs therapy, but I'm not sure he needs Help
