If we see the same post across multiple sites and the posts elsewhere have almost close/acceptable solutions should we post here so people who are spending their time to help can leave the post and go for other posts asking for help?

What d'ya guys think?

I get annoyed when I answer a question and discover its already been answered in a duplicate thread here. Waste of my time when I might have been helping someone else.

I don't read any other SQL forums ... so there is zero chance of me saving that time on a multi-site duplicate post ... so I would greatly appreciate folk posting links to duplicate posts on other sites.

I am a moderator @ASP.NET Forums, and also visit SSP.com have seen *plenty* of posts across all three forums. generally its same/very similar userid they use. and the question is cut/paste.

If I see duplicate posts and atleast one of them has an acceptable I will try to alert.

a lot of people cross post between here and dbforums.com as well.

when that happens, it's almost always answered here first because of Peso's lightning-quick responses.

I don't have a problem with people asking on multiple sites. Different communities, for sure. But it would be nice to hear that the issue was solved elsewhere - I would be inclined to follow the link and see what solutions folk at other sites had suggested.

Totally agree. And I see Peso going to great lengths to resolve a problem by writing long scripts..It takes me a few minutes to go through the script to understand what he did so I am sure he spent a good 10-15 minutes working on it. Sometimes the OP can get little annoyed that we are limiting his responses here but hey..why should we waste our time doing the same thing..when someone else can benefit from it..

I have noticed a few times where a question has been answered here, but the debate rages on at another site for days.

If I see the same question on multiple sites, I usually don't answer on any of them.

Actually, a better answer is to attract all the heavyweights here ... then the other sites can just close down ...

... Graz, we've got a great spamming package we wrote, if you want to Spam all the contributors on the other boards to head on over here let me know

Have you posted this question on any of the other sites you post on?

I don't answer any cross-site posts. I typically highlight any dbf - sqlteam cross posts.

One more thing I want to add. Generally when somebody notices that there is duplicate post, he post a reply indicating the duplicate thread but still there is no indication on topic level whether the post is duplicate and we often have to read the post to see that it's duplicate.(Such a waste of time!!)

It would be quite useful if, say moderator, can indicate that post is duplicate (or may be he can just remove it) or if there is some facility through which a post can be marked as duplicate and this is indicated at topic level.

If I have understood you correctly Harsh:

I notice that on Merkin's watch he tends to lock [the duplicate threads of] such posts.

I appreciate the "Open and clear" policy:

http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=82107

but my $0.02 is that it generates clutter. But I've also been the "victim" of trying to reach a post which has been deleted (by the OP I suspect) and wondered where it had gone ... particularly when I've just spent 10 minutes constructing a reply that is now in the Ether! So I reckon damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don't

What I meant was that suppose I found a topic which is duplicate, rather than replying to it as "Duplicate Post", I would like to have some way to report it as Duplicate and Moderator then can either change the title of the post to say "Topic foo (Duplicate)" or indicate in some way that it is duplicate (may be make it italic or strike out the name of the topic)

I just don't want to open the post to see that it is duplicate.

I'm all in favor of finding some ways to identify duplicate threads. I really, really don't want to get too far away from the standard forum code. How about a special forum for duplicate topics that can be viewed but not posted to? We could just move the duplicates there.

As far as duplicates of posts on other sites ... that's a little trickier. If it appears on both sites I'd prefer they got a better answer here than somewhere else.

graz,
I don't mind having a read-only forum for duplicate posts. But I think that will require more work on your side rather than just indicating existing topic as duplicate by some formatting changes.

Besides, it will also be against general user perception where they can see the forum but not able to post in it.
