Sledge or Sled?

A sledge in english is a very heavy hammer, usually used in demolition.

A sled is a toy used in the snow.

Peter's use of sledge is valid English (or at least American).

From Google:
Definitions of sledge on the Web:

transport in a sleigh
ride in or travel with a sledge; "the antarctic expedition sledged along the coastline"; "The children sledged all day by the lake"
sled: a vehicle mounted on runners and pulled by horses or dogs; for transportation over snow
maul: a heavy long-handled hammer used to drive stakes or wedges
sledgehammer: beat with a sledgehammer

A sled, sledge or sleigh is a vehicle with runners for sliding instead of wheels for rolling. It is used for transport on surfaces with low friction, usually snow or ice but any grassy surface is good when it is not too dry. In some cases round river-washed stones make a good surface for sledges. Devices to be pulled across bare ground, such as a travois, are not generally called "sleds", although skids often are.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sledge

a large sled pulled by animals and used for transportation across snow and ice.

Actually I was referring the what is known as "pulka" in Swedish.
A little moulded piece of plastic, large enough for a child to sit in and run downhill...

We call that a bobslæde in Dansih, that translates to bobsleigh.

We only got 1/2 an inch ... so no fun here (apart from watching the news about 40-50 cars that had bumped into each other on the highway).
