I was in London early this year attending the SQL Server 2005 road show. I was quite excited as it was my first event involving SQL. The first speaker came on and started to talk about Sequel Server, and I wonder for second when they would come down to what we really were there for .... until it hit me I guess I dont have to add that it was the first time ever I heard about SQL i spoken english.

So here is the question, do all you english speaking folks pronouce SQL as sequel (seekwel) and is this site then called sequel-team?

I say sequel. Others say the letters. There's a lengthy thread here about it. It's just whatever your preference is. The wikipedia page said it is pronounced sequel and that modification was done by a MS employee. Someone then modified it to say it can go either way, but he wasn't from MS. But who knows!?

I say <sequel>. I can't think of anyone I've ever worked with that said the letters SQL.

well, there was one guy said the letters but we gave him an atomic wedgie. Now he says <sequel> too.

Every MS rep I've ever heard (including VPs) says "sequel server". If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

Now, if you want to be original, you can pronounce it "squeal server", which has its own connotations.

the IBM system/r system had a query language called 'Structured English Query Language'. This was referred to as SEQUEL and later was shortened to SQL. It was shortened because an aircraft manufacturer had a trademark on the word SEQUEL already.

Because of this, I think the correct pronunciation of SQL is 'sequel' and not S-Q-L.

but wouldn't that be a breach of the aircraft manufacturer's trademark?

Sometimes I say sequel, and sometime I say the letters, depending upon whether I am in the mood for a wedgie or not. Monday I may wear boxers, so who knows what could happen?

sql = squeal
SQL = S.Q.L...unless I'm sufficiently lazy, tired, etc...then it's sequel.

Other than that, I have no distinctions.

Yay for dead-topic resurrections!
