On days like this one i wish i had my own office instead
of sharing it with 4 coworkers...

My productivity today has been exactly 0.
I rewrote exactly 1 query and wrote one line of ASP code...

And best of all i don't even feel bad about it.

Does anyone else experience that kind of day?
hopefully not too many in a row...

Oh ya.

I am having one today. contemplating a screen saver that looks like I am typing sql queries so
I can sleep and "look" busy. perception > reality.

Ummmm, 1+1=2, so your productivity is 2, not zero. That's about twice as productive as my average day.

And what if you rewrote a 10,000 line query, hmmmm? I know, lines of code is not a reliable productivity measure.

I got my first real office job in 1998, when the internet was in full swing and we all had access from our workstations.

I often wonder: What the heck was a slow day like in the office before everyone had internet access ??? Or even workstations to at least play solitaire or things like that? I can't imagine sitting there in front of a typewriter or stack of papers with nothing to do and everyone who walks by can see you just sitting there ... maybe crossword puzzles ???

How do you look busy if you're a coal minor...or a heart surgeon?

nurse: Dr, you've been closing that patient for a long time...oh look, his stitches are in a "hello kitty" pattern!

Well, since you're not being productive, might as well have some fun (not) doing it:

http://www.funny-games.biz/splash-back.html

Now, you COULD be productive in writing a SQL statement to find the best solutions for various board configuations. Could be a pretty good reader's challenge.

Assuming Arnold doesn't already have a solution.

Goofing off, pre-internet:
1. Wander around, looking like you're doing something important.
2. Stop to talk to pretty girl in accounting.
3. Stop to talk to pretty girl in sales.
4. Talk to buddy about sports and pretty girls in accounting and sales.
5. Repeat until lunch time.
6. Take a early, long lunch and drink lots of beer.
7. Repeat 1 though 5 in the afternoon.
8. Leave early.

Goofing off in the internet age:
1. Setup job to send an email to my boss at 6:00 am to say I am working remotely via VPN
2. Sleep till 10:30 am
3. Get up, and answer a few emails.
4. Take a leisurely breakfast at local coffee shop.
5. Answer a few emails.
6. Post stupid stuff on SQLTeam
7. Answer a few emails.
8. Send email to boss at 8:00 pm to explain how I fixed some critical problem to make it appear like I’ve been hard at work on it all day.

Michael I think your pre-internet is the advanced version. Ours was

1) Walk around with a clipboard in your hand
2) If you see the same boss twice, start making notes on the clipboard

Current one is

1) Turn computer on
2) Complain how slow computer is to everybody in sight, then email everyone telling them how slow computer is and just in case people didn't get the message, ring them to tell them
3) Turn computer off
4) GOTO 1

steve

-----------

Don't worry head. The computer will do all the thinking from now on.

In 2 months I've written 0 lines of code....but i've filled in numerous of 'SOX-compliant development-process change forms', in a "cover everybody elses ass" exercise that is now mandatory. Productivity has died, but everybody now knows, reviews, agrees and signs off that the requirements, functional, technical, testing and installation specs are documented fully....(not necessarily delivering the right result but that's beside the point), but the actual application development itself isn't covered.... and the tracking of all these 20+ signoffs is done on paper.

...the progress is stimulating ...

ha! spirit1!

99% of my work days are copies of your today's day!

My head grows more and more stupid (after the eve booze).

Trembling fingers, jerky movements, fuzzy speech.

We're gonna need to go ahead and move you downstairs into storage B. We have some new people coming in, and we need all the space we can get. So if you could go ahead and pack up your stuff and move it down there, that would be terrific, OK?
