I don't mind the "I don't know" answer. That is much better than someone thinking they know something and giving you some BS answer.-ec |

i really don't mind the "i don't know answer" if the task is not routine, but if it is, and the answer is still the same, expect an incident report --------------------keeping it simple... |

I get a slight variant i.e. "We should all be doing ... <Some madcap scheme> ... Who's responsiblity is it?" To which my first reaction is invariably "Well you thought of it!"steveAnd how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. |

Sometimes you have to use answers like that, because the truth is too painful:Question:"Why isn't my application working"Correct Answer:"Because is was developed by you, and you're a complete idiot!"Actual Answer:"I don't know."CODO ERGO SUM |

I get a slight variation.Manager: What is the matter with your program, why is the job data not right.IT: Because the data entered is not right. (SISO)Manager: Who’s job is it to see the data is entered correctly.IT: The supervisor.Supervisor: “My people are to busy to enter it right”. You need to make the program so they can’t do it wrong.IT: I will get right on it, Right after I finish the air car that uses no fuel and flies itself. @$$#0!&JimUsers <> Logic |

Yeah Jim I get exactly the same too.One of the things I had to do (Can't change this app!) was write a whole sequence of reports to point out 'wrong' data. Of course no-one has time to look at these reports but at least I can look at the numbers at the bottom and say "oh look, there are 200 errors this month when there were only 50 last"And how is education supposed to make me feel smarter? Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain. |

Reminds me of a client [the MD in fact] saying "What's this 'Circular Reference' error in my Spreadhseet?"It was the whole cash flow for his company. It had everything in it - each employees salarary, sales projections, and the half dozen obligatory kitchen sinks. He had told me how impressed the bank were with the quality of information he was able to give them.So I explained what a circular reference was. And then I demonstrated it to him:"See this Profit figure in your bottom line here?""Yes""OK, so now I'll press recalculate ... and now its gone up""Ah, OK""I'll press recalculate again ... this time its gone down""Got it"Went back six months later and he had his famous spreadhseet open on his PC. I pushed Recalculate and sure enough the "Circular reference" message popped up again ...Kristen |
