..upgrading all of your SQL Server databases to sql server 2008?

I was asked just recently...I suggested that all 6.x, 7, 2kx to be upgraded...

So what's your answer?

My answer is:

Because "never change a running system" is boring - I need a challenge!

No, you're never too old to Yak'n'Roll if you're too young to die.

If they are running OK, not liable to benefit from More RAM etc. from newer version of SQL (e.g. if they are running on Enterprise and able to use all available RAM), and not costing anything extra (i.e. more than they would do in SQL2008) to maintain, then why change?

Nervous about support being withdrawn? possible hacker exploits? no longer being fixed by MS?

Migrating requires complete regression test to check that it works OK in newer version of SQL - plus, probably, some DEV time to fix things that it turns out have been broken all along, you just got away with it

But, if you upgrade you get:

Possibility to use TORN_PAGE / CHECKSUM settings on the disk, and on the backups, that will bring data corruption issues to light sooner.

Opportunity to use ONLINE Index Rebuilds etc. which may reduce housekeeping window bottlenecks

Availability of more ram / CPUs in newer machines (possibly without the cost of Enterprise version), thus better performance. Probably other things too : Is multiple instances useful to you in managing servers?

Opportunity for DEVs to use newer features to improve user experience - e.g. Record Paging for Web Apps, enhanced partitioning for improved performance on large tables, things like that.

An excuse to make you look busy, indispensable, and retained until your pension starts paying out

Also availability of READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT - which should kill most of your DEADLOCKs stone dead - but I'm sure you don't have any of those ...

By the way, I had a word with your VP's boss and he's not so keen ...

The most important reason is support from Microsoft.
