I used to be an avid pool player. I tended to play 8 ball, 9 ball, or 1 pocket. I've never played 3 cushion or snooker.

Anyway, life intervened and I got away from playing. My nephew, who is 15, came down from Michigan to stay 9 days with me. His mother told him that at one time I was a pool shark. That isn't really true, but I used to be pretty good.

Anyway, he asked me to teach him, so we went to a hall and I gave him some basic lessons. That cue felt really good in my hand, so I think I'm going to take up the sport again.

Anyway, any of you folks casual or avid players of cue sports?

yep. i love pool!
i don't know what it's called but we play the one where one player has fully colored balls, the other partialy colored.
you can pot the black only after you cleared all of your balls and before that you can't hit it directly.

spirit1 - 8 ball :)

My dad and brother both play A League up here (which isn't really saying much)...I'm usually their DD, so I get a lot of watchin' done. I usually go out with my bro on the weekends so he can kick my butt a little for practice.

I'd say I'm OK, but not consistent when it comes to pool. I've been working on my bank shots a lot lately...I still suck, though. haha.

My youngest sister and I use to travel to all the local bars to play. We'd drink free all the time, until we couldn't get anyone to play us anymore. Amazing, how tight-fisted people get with their money when they have to give it out all the time! Anyway, that was 20+ years ago and I've really lost my touch as I rarely play. My sister now has a pool table in her house. My nephew, who has heard all the stories about our younger days, takes great delight in beating me whenever I go over to visit. I really should go to the pool halls a little bit, refine my skills and teach that boy a lesson! Or team up with him when he's old enough to hit the pubs and start drinking free again.....

I play APA. I'm currently only playing on a 9-ball team due to having a son recently. I'm rated higher than most. In 8-ball the skill levels go from 2-7 where 2 is the lowest and 7 is the highest. I'm a 5 in 8-ball (6 and 7 are the higher bracket). In 9-ball, the skill levels go from 1-9. I'm typically a 6 in 9-ball although I just went down to a 5 due to not playing for about 6 months. 6-9 are the higher bracket in 9-ball.

A few sessions ago, I was on 5 teams (3 8-ball, 2 9-ball), so I was playing 4 nights per week. One of the nights we played both formats. Life has changed quite a bit since then!

Our local league is here: http://www.sdapa.com/

This is why beer makes you play better! From Cliff Claven on "Cheers"

"Well you see, Norm, it's like this . . . A herd of buffalo can only
move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the heard is hunted, it
is the lowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This
natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general
speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular
killing of the weakest members.
In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the
slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol
kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest
brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates
the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient
machine.

And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Tara, you sure were busy! Don't know how you kept up with all that!

I like that answer, jim.

Em, I tried Vodka while programming once. I got jack-crap done...lol. Well, other than a scratchpad full of useful ramblings, which later turned into random squiggles...yeeeah.

never drink and programm!
usually you write brilliant and beautiful programs under influence.
the problem rises when you have no idea what they do the next morning

My problem is alcohol makes me really, really giddy. It's like someone totally loaded me up with caffeine, and I have no outlet for the energy. And then the crash strikes...ZONK!
