Sometimes I think that the problem with sql is that its grammar is too close to real english (a subset, that is). Many queries you can read aloud and they almost make a sentence. So when a clueless person comes across SQL for the first time, they are less frightened by it (it's just like talking!) than they would otherwise be and so they take the plunge. It's the first step towards appearing on this twit list.
If it had less friendly syntax, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Befunge the initial barrier would be higher. Maybe less twits.
