Running Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2 64bit and SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard. 8 GB of RAM is installed, page file is set to 4 GB. This server supports our ERP system, Reporting Services, and other applications.

Due to some problems we are having Dell support has recommended increasing the page file size and adding memory. My question is related to the Paging File counters % Usage and % Usage Peak. % Usage is showing an average of 27.284. % Usage Peak is showing 100%. Does it make sense for there to be such a difference between those?

Set page memory to 1.5 times the RAM as recommended by Microsoft which in your case is 12GB

Thanks for the reply. Now that I look at the following explanation for % Usage Peak I think I understand how this is possible.

"Show the peak the page file got to since the last reboot. Usually this is not too far off from the page file usage %. Unfortunately when page file issues happen, they do not correct themselves without a reboot."

I also found the following article which challenges the conventional advice of 1.5 x RAM.

Found these articles also.

"There is no specific recommendation for page file size. Your requirements will be based on the hardware and software that you use and the load that you put on the computer."
